Who are you?

MathTree began in 1999, as Salvo Educational Enterprises. Lynn Salvo, the founder, held small camps in two locations that year, and taught them herself. One camp was at the Washington Waldorf School in Bethesda, MathTree’s first dignified venue. The other venue was humble -- the basement of the VFW Post in McLean, VA. Though it was cool in spite of the summer heat, it reeked of alcohol and tobacco from upstairs. Since its modest beginnings, MathTree has been hosted in venues such as:

  • Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC and Bethesda, MD
  • Flint Hill School, Oakton, VA
  • Langley School in McLean, VA
  • The Madeira School in McLean, VA
  • Connelly School of the Holy Child in Potomac, MD
  • Two Rivers Charter School in Washington, DC
  • SEED School in Washington, DC

MathTree was incorporated as MathTree, Inc., in 2001.

The MathTree skill development curriculum used in the camps was approved in 1999 for use in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). FCPS is the twelfth largest public school system in the US (by number of students enrolled). Since then, Lynn Salvo has developed numerous curricula that are proprietary to MathTree camps.

In its early years, MathTree held camps for rising 4th to rising 9th graders. Gradually, MathTree has introduced camps for younger children:

  • Bean Counting 101 for rising 1st and 2nd graders
  • Multiplication Matters for rising 3rd graders
  • Divide and Conquer for rising 4th graders

In 2009, MathTree introduced Money 101 for 13-15 year olds.

What do you do?

We offer math camps for children, mainly during the summer.

Why do you do what you do?

We love math, we love kids, and we love teaching kids math. From our adult perspective, we are aware of the continuum of math skills. When we teach a young child what a fraction means, we know that one day our explanation may help that child understand trigonometry. And when we work with a teenager who is taking calculus and who is trying to cope with implicit differentiation, we can tell that the student was never truly taught deeply about the number one.

How do you do it?

We teach math in multiple modes, inspired by the Lesh translation model. Lynn Salvo, founder of MathTree, considers this model the most important nugget she got from six years in her Mathematics Education Leadership PhD program.

Lynn Salvo’s personal philosophy of mathematics education permeates the camps.

Who have you done it for?

Thousands of children have attended our camps in the DC metropolitan area during our first ten summers. These are comments from parents of children who have attended each of the camps we offer:

  • Bean Counting 101
“[My daughter] is doing extremely well now, and is ahead of her peers (her teacher gives her extra homework because she gets the assigned work done so quickly). I wanted her to gain confidence, get a ‘leg up,’ and to gain a positive outlook towards math. All goals were achieved!” -- Angela Maria Lungu

  • Multiplication Matters
“My child enjoyed this camp more than any other camp and is looking forward for one next year. She did not forget her multiplication tricks and uses them in her daily math work. It made my job easier in introducing multiplication to my daughter.” -- Maha Lakshmi

  • Divide and Conquer
“It was a wonderful experience. Sam's abilities in math have soared this year in a large part due to her familiarity with the subject matter. Thank you.” -- Kathy Williams

  • MathTree
“My son loves MathTree. He enjoyed the camp and feels so happy when he uses what he learned in the camp to solve his math problems in school. He already asked me to register him for next year.” -- L. Wang

  • Algebra Appetizers for Adolescents
“It has been helpful preparing our children to return to school after summer break. It is useful to fill in gaps of knowledge about math topics.” -- L. Ensign

  • Games-Art-Puzzles
“...the games and other activities in GAP helped supplement the other camps.” -- W. Beamon

What makes you different?

  • We make math fun by making sure children get it and by teaching it in ways that are intriguing.
  • We help children make mathematical discoveries.
  • We use MathTree proprietary curricula for each level.
  • From rising 4th graders up, we customize the skill curriculum to your child.
