What Is Mathtree®?

MathTree is a program that assesses 200 math skills through a series of six diagnostic tests. The skills assessed range from basic skills through pre-algebra skills. MathTree is set up so that students can accomplish swift remediation of missing skills, then learn new skills.

MathTree features:
  • 200 skills from simple addition to negative fractional exponents, organized into six levels
  • Skills arranged so that the foundations are continuously laid for more advanced skills
  • Finer points of skills that frequently cause problems split out as separate skills
  • Within a level, skills of several types but similar difficulty
    • Levels I, II, and III skills: Basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percents
    • Levels IV to VI: Skills that ease the student into pre-algebra and beginning algebra by progressing seamlessly from numbers to variables
  • Free response student work rather than multiple choice, providing the teacher access to the process the student is using to get an answer
Each MathTree level contains:
  • An inspiration page with analogies drawn from various parts of a tree (Roots, Trunk, Branches, Twigs, Stems, and Leaves)
  • A diagnostic test
  • Two skill lists, one listing the skills on the test in order, one listing the skills on the test by skill type
  • One stand-alone skill sheet per diagnostic test question with simple, clear, conversational instructions
  • Three groups of problems, all of a similar level of difficulty, on most skill sheets
  • Two or more reassessment tests.
The Teacher's Handbook contains:
  • Explanations of the MathTree system
  • Complete annotated answer keys for all tests and skill sheets
  • An overall progress record for each student
