Description
Multiplication Matters is mainly for rising 3rd graders, but it is also appropriate for very advanced younger children as well as 4th and 5th graders who have had difficulty learning multiplication facts. Multiplication facts are the roots from which much of the rest of math grows. In this camp, children learn their facts through a variety of "tricks" with exotic names such as 6 x Even and Thumbs Up, many using hand configurations. All are deeply mathematically based. Campers are not plagued with flash cards, but connect to the multiplication facts by creating a proportional set of fact cards that engage them physically, visually, and auditorially. Campers play plenty of math games and use manipulatives to make multiplication rock solid. For a more detailed description, click here.
The content of this course was recently refined through dissertation research conducted by the founder of MathTreeŽ and is proprietary to MathTree.
To be sure your child is ready for Multiplication Matters, please consider the following statements:
My child has mastered regrouping. For example, my child can readily compute 28 + 28 on paper.
My child has not memorized multiplication facts from 2 x 2 through 9 x 9.
Both should be true.
Campers must be able to add two-digit numbers with regrouping fluently.
Additional Application Needed
This camp requires the completion of an additional registration form at the The Langley School website. We apologize for the additional paperwork, but our agreement with the school includes a stipulation that the registration and payment be handled by them in this case.
